Abstract

In 1957 I wrote a paper on foreign investment for a meeting of the International Economic Association,1 and in 1965 another one, also for the IEA; 2 but since then my attention has been devoted to other problems, and it is only in recent weeks, owing to the invitation to this conference, that I have looked at the subject again. In spite of my lesser interest in the subject, only partially recovered, I have obviously enjoyed revisiting a place in which I had not been in 20 years, since I was curious to see how much it had changed, which has been somewhat more than I expected.
