Abstract

The reader will have already drawn graphs of algebraic functions by tabulating values and plotting points and will know that the points whose coordinates satisfy the equation y = ax + b lie on a straight line. This line crosses the y-axis at the point where y = b and makes an angle with the x-axis whose tangent equals a so that a is the gradient of the line.
