Abstract
The Royal Society of Arts was simply ‘The Society of Arts’ in Victorian England. The word ‘art’ can be used to cover a much wider field than painting and sculpture and in the context of the following quotation, it may safely be taken to mean ‘engineering’. The occasion is a paper by Professor Osborne Reynolds and the date is 1883. He has a message for academic and industrialist alike as we approach the 21st Century. It is a message all too often overlooked by politician, accountant and industrial manager alike.
