Abstract
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564. His father was a prosperous tradesman and occupied a number of important civic offices, but in the later 1570s his fortunes seem to have declined rapidly. In 1580 he was fined a considerable sum for some unknown offence and by 1592 he was failing to observe the legal requirement to attend church once a month for fear of being arrested for debt.
