Abstract

In this chapter, we deal with poverty in a comprehensive, dynamic way, trying to answer questions such as: are people with low financial resources bound to remain poor or are they able to get out of poverty; do people fight to get away from poverty or do they adapt to it (see Galbraith, 1979); are adequate financial resources enough to escape poverty, or do other characteristics complement these financial resources and does the lack of such resources limit the possibilities of escaping poverty?

Notes and References

  1. This has far reaching public policy implications. In case the lack of motivator factors is more important than the hygiene factors in escaping poverty the role of income support programmes should be limited and one should emphasize the role of non-material goods such as recognition, non-discrimination, etc.

  3. One can also see the ‘losers’ group as accommodators. Such accommodation is on a lower level than the middle group. For more on the differences in accommodation between the two groups, see section 7.4 of this chapter.
