Abstract
In Chapter 5 I suggested that The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeare’s ‘Plays Unpleasant’. This is borne out by several of the productions discussed, especially Jonathan Miller’s and for very different reasons John Caird’s. In conclusion I will consider some more radical responses to the problems the play presents.
