Summary

This paper describes a microcomputer program for aiding the design and manufacture of dies for cold extrusion of cans. Important design parameters are examined and discussed. The program as yet, deals with only cylindrical products. On accessing the program, the user is presented with a generalised sectional view of a can. Dimensions of the particular can to be manufactured are keyed in. Details of billet material and billet diameter are also input, in the form of answers to questions displayed on a screen. The program then caluclates extrusion pressure, punch pressure and container pressure. An appropriate die design is then displayed, based on recommendations published by the International Cold forging Group (ICPG). If a preforming operaton is required, a die is designed for this and displayed also. The user may modify any aspect of the designs if it is considered advantageous, by keying in new dimensions. When Acceptable designs have been achieved, tapes for machining the dies on an NC lathe can be obtained.
