Abstract
The explosion of May 1968 seemed to come as a complete surprise, although commentators since then have seen it as a revolt against the 10 years of de Gaulle’s authoritarian style of government. For some weeks, France seemed on the brink of a further revolution. The first passage below chronicles the events, and the second, written shortly after the event, rejects the idea of a coming revolution in developed societies.
