Abstract

The explosion of May 1968 seemed to come as a complete surprise, although commentators since then have seen it as a revolt against the 10 years of de Gaulle’s authoritarian style of government. The first passage below chronicles the events, and the second, written shortly after the event, rejects the idea of a coming revolution in developed societies.
