Abstract
In the autumn of 1983, a famous problem of mathematics that had resisted all attempts at solution for over 100 years was finally solved. Such is the nature of mathematics that, though famous among mathematicians, this problem was hardly known to the general public, though in many respects it is more fundamental than the widely known Fermat’s Last Theorem problem, to which it is somewhat related.
