No single extract could be fully representative of Dickens’s art in Hard Times; but the following analysis is offered as an example that may be helpful to the student called upon to undertake a similar exercise. It forms the opening of Book I, Chapter 5 (‘The Keynote’), and the lines are numbered here for ease of reference.
