Abstract
To judge from what is said by reputable critics, the goodness or greatness of a work of music appears to be a matter of (i) its exploitation of the medium as such; (ii) the clarity and intensity of its depiction of emotion and mood; and (iii) the unity in diversity of the elements making it up. The second and third, it seems, are of far greater importance than the first.
