Abstract
We saw in Chapter 2 that for Rāmānuja the finite (human) self cannot achieve salvation-which consists in union with Brahman, begun in this life and consummated in the hereafter-without first acquiring knowledge of its own and of Brahman’s essential nature. Rāmānuja puts it thus:
