The Genotoxicity of Benzidine and 4-Dimethylaminoazobenzene: A Survey of the Literature

Abstract

A survey of the available mutagenicity literature on the two previously defined, activation-dependent carcinogens used in the Second UKEMS Collaborative Genotoxicity Study was performed using the Environmental Mutagen Information Centre (EMIC) files. Both benzidine and 4-dimethylaminoazobenzene each has in excess of 200 listings. A summary to illustrate the range of assay systems which have been used to investigate the genotoxicity of these compounds was compiled and has been used to generate tables 1 and 2. The classification of the genetic system was basically that used by EMIC for its assay system/biological endpoint category.
