Abstract

Before entering the world of office work it is important that young people are made aware of the personal qualities and qualifications required in the various jobs. It is essential that the would-be office worker finds out the qualifications required as early as possible so that the correct courses can be taken before leaving school or qualifications can be obtained at school which will lead to the appropriate training after school. For most young people at school the first crossroads comes at the end of the third year when choices have to be made about courses in the fourth and fifth years which lead to the taking of the various public examinations. While it is not essential that ‘commercial’ courses are taken at this stage the would-be office worker would be well advised to seek the guidance of the careers service at school or the appropriate careers service outside school.
