In Chapter 5, we examined some problems which necessitated finding either the maximum or minimum of a function of one variable. We were concerned with finding the turning points of two-dimensional functions. However, many problems in economics and business related fields involve functions of several independent variables. Because of the increasing complexity of the mathematics involved, we shall concern ourselves, in the main, with three-dimensional surfaces. I have therefore only stated conditions for the optimisation of functions involving two independent variables.
