Abstract

What is The Winter’s Tale about? What is its meaning? A play communicates moment by moment, through its language, plot, structure, characters, stagecraft and style. Much of what can be said about the meaning of The Winter’s Tale has already been indicated in the ‘summaries and commentary’ and will be referred to in the ‘technical features’. However, it is helpful to pick out some of the themes, i.e. the recurrent ideas that give meaning to the play as a whole.
