Community Psychiatric Nursing

Current Themes in Psychiatry

Abstract

Community Psychiatric Nursing involves the extension of care by trained psychiatric nurses to the community. It is a comparatively recent development which has became very prominent in Britain in the last ten years. This review will therefore concentrate on the British experience. Origins and history have been reviewed by Hunter (1974). The background was one of post-war enthusiasm for change, with unlocking of doors, improvement in mental hospital environments, recognition of an active role for nurses, and an increasing emphasis on care in the community.
