Abstract

Sexual offenses are a relatively uncommon form of antisocial behavior. If court proceedings are any guide to the volume of crimes in a society, the vast majority of crimes in Britain are breaches of the motoring laws and theft in its various forms. In 1980 there were 2.7 million serious offenses recorded by the police; of these, 0.8 per cent (22 thousand) were sexual ones. There were also roughly half a million people convicted of non-indictable offenses, approximately 1.4% (7 thousand) for sexual ones (Home Office 1981).
