St Antony’s I

Abstract

There are difficulties over compiling the full story of the inception of St Antony’s. AB’s correspondence with R. A. H. Clyde, his emissary in the UK, has been lost. There is, for some reason, a ban on the inspection of the early records in the Oxford University Registry. AB’s letters, over thirty years, had repeatedly emphasised his wish to retire from business and devote himself to culture and the arts; but give no hint of any idea of founding a college. However there is no doubt as to the actual course of events. For AB’s motives we depend on such evidence as we have of the lines on which his mind was working.
