Except for a significant minority of landlords almost everybody in Russia believed that serfdom was an evil which had to be eradicated. Here Yuriy Samarin, a noted Slavophile writing in autumn 1856, argues that serfdom must be reformed in order to renovate Russia’s internal structure and thus enable her to regain external strength.
