Selective and nonselective motor innervation of intrafusal muscle fibres in the cat

  • Chapter
The Muscle Spindle

Abstract

Tracings of nerve fibers by light or electron microscopy of serial sections can provide reliable information on the distribution of motor axons within an intrafusal bundle. Thus far, only a small number of muscle spindles have been examined in this manner (Banks, 1981; Arbuthnott et al., 1982). Intrafusal branching patterns of 50 poles of spindles were reconstructed for this study. This sample size permits meaningful analysis of motor innervation to spindles of the cat tenuissimus muscle.
