Group II (muscle spindle?) afferent action on different classes of γ-motoneurones

  • Chapter
The Muscle Spindle

Abstract

An early attempt to investigate reflex regulation of fusimotor neurones was made by Hunt and Paintal (1958). They were able to describe many reflexely evoked effects but also made the comment that “From the response of fusimotor neurones to volleys in various peripheral nerves …. no meaningful pattern is evident”. The authors made the conclusion that the pattern became confused due to the use of afferent stimuli maximal for all myelinated fibres. Today it is evident also, that the lack of knowledge at that time about the two functional classes of γ-motoneurones (static and dynamic) may have further blurred the picture.
