Abstract

The action of static (γs) and dynamic (γd) fusimotor neurones on the responses of muscle spindle primary (Ia) afferents to muscle lengthening has been studied exhaustively over the last twenty years. In comparison, relatively little attention has been paid to these interactions during muscle shortening (Crowe & Matthews, 1964; Lennerstrand & Thoden, 1968). One of the identifying properties of a pure γd fibre is that it does not maintain Ia firing during the release phase of a stretch-hold-release movement when stimulated throughout (Emonet-Dénand, Laporte & Matthews, 1977). However, by varying the relative timing of the stimulation and the length variations, we have found that phasic yd activity can indeed maintain Ia firing even during rapid muscle shortening (Morgan, Prochazka & Proske, 1985).
