Abstract

For thousands of years people have needed to keep records on all the various activities that make human society such a complicated organisation. Records have been kept on battles and wars, trade and industry, political events and social upheavals. In addition, people have recorded their feelings on love and family life, on nature and the universe, and their religious beliefs and innermost thoughts. In every area of human activity, records have been kept describing those activities: history is, partly, the study and interpretation of these records.
