Abstract

Sir Charles Marlow has proposed a match between his own son, Young Marlow, and Kate Hardcastle, the daughter of Squire Hardcastle who lives in a country village with his wife Dorothy and her son by a former marriage, Tony Lumpkin. Accordingly Marlow travels from town to meet Kate accompanied by his friend George Hastings who is in love with Kate’s cousin Constance Neville, an orphan who resides with the Hardcastles. Marriage with Kate is difficult as Mrs Hardcastle has decided that in order to keep Constance’s fortune (consisting mainly of jewellery) in the family she shall marry Tony; the two realise they are incompatible. It is Hastings’ intention on this visit to elope with Constance, travel to the Continent and there marry her.
