Abstract

Emma stands at the centre of the novel to which she gives her name: the opening and closing sentences refer to her, and there is nothing of importance between them that does not have a direct or indirect bearing on her experience and development. This gives the novel a remarkable quality of unity and concentration: unlike the Victorian novel of a generation or two later, with its proliferating sub-plots, it is held together by presenting the world as the heroine sees it and excluding almost everything else.
