Abstract

Records in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century diaires, journals and theatre accounts show evidence of the great popularity of Doctor Faustus in the theatre. As well as being performed in London, the play toured England and Europe, and proved to be exciting both for audience and actors. A report of one early performance in Exeter described a rather frightening experience.
