Abstract
The following chapter started life as a talk to an audience of serving teachers attending the University of Newcastle upon Tyne Education Society in 1977. Since then it has gathered dust. On reading it through with an eye to rejuvenation it became apparent that while the descriptive parts were still valid, a number of conclusions were beginning to look ‘tarnished’. Ten years ago cognitive style research looked promising to teachers. It seemed to use a language which at first hearing gave hope of providing something applicable in classrooms. Unfortunately, next to nothing has happened and teachers may be forgiven for having grown impatient.
