Perspectives on the Aspirations, Values and Achievements of Australian Adolescents

  • Chapter
Personality, Cognition and Values

Abstract

This chapter presents perspectives on the aspirations, values and achievement of Australian adolescents. It does not deal specifically with general aspects of intellectual ability and motivation, since these are ably discussed elsewhere in this volume. Initially, brief explanations of the factors and processes involved in determining patterns of aspirations, values and achievement are presented. The major research findings in the general area are then reviewed. A framework within which diverse perspectives on the aspirations, values and achievements of adolescents can be understood, namely, personal possibility theory, is outlined together with the results of comparative studies within this framework on Australian adolescents and their counterparts in the United States, Netherlands, India, and Singapore. Suggestions on how such a framework might be modified to include context, choice and constraints in the lives of adolescents are presented as part of a developing theory called CALC (Choice in the Adolescent Life Course).
