Abstract

Baal. An ancient Canaanite god, first appearing in inscriptions of the early Middle Bronze Age (c2000 Bc). An important temple dedicated to Baal has been excavated at Ugarit. One of his main roles was as a god of fertility. The worship of Baal continued into Phoenician times and also appears in the Punic west, especially at Carthage.
