Abstract
ATP is an essential constituent of all cells, providing a source for the transfer of energy necessary for numerous intracellular processes such as the synthesis of molecules, cell motility and contraction, ion pumping, and a substrate for the formation of cyclic 3’,5’-AMP. In the past, one has usually associated ATP exclusively with intracellular rather than extracellular functions, primarily because little ATP can be detected in extracellular fluids in contrast to the high cytoplasmic concentrations (2–15 mM). However, during the past 30 years, evidence has accumulated that ATP and/or its nucleoside derivative, adenosine, can be released from a variety of neuronal preparation to perform extracellular functions. The reader is referred to the reviews of Phillis and Wu (1981), Stone (1981) and Su (1983) for possible roles of extracellular purines in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Several symposia dealing with extracellular functions of purines have also been published (Baer and Drummond, 1979; Daly et al., 1983; Berne et al., 1983).
