Abstract

I have been asked to talk about the UK’s strategic interests and priorities. I am glad to have the opportunity to do this so soon after the British people have given such a clear and decisive verdict on where they think that our national interests and priorities lie. I would like to draw a few lessons from the 1983 general election which I believe to be relevant, not only for Britain’s place in the Alliance but also for the future of NATO as a whole. I should also like to say a few words about my own personal priorities as Secretary of State for Defence over the coming months.
