Abstract

Self induced vibrations referred to as chatter frequently occur in metal cutting process. The characteristics of the dynamic cutting process is required for prediction of the machine tool chatter. This paper investigates the dynamic characteristics of the Metal Cutting Process mainly in the built-up edge region. The method developed by the author enables one to investigate dynamic cutting process for the said region for two cases of (i) BUE present and (ii) BUE artificially removed by preheating the tool above recrystallization temperature. The dynamic characteristics of the metal cutting process are determined: (a) the BUE region, with BUE and BUE artificially removed for different cutting speeds, (b) for frequency of chip thickness variation, (c) for amplitude of chip thickness variation, and (d) for different temperatures of preheating the tool. The results are presented in the paper.
