Abstract
Robert Oxton Bolt was born in Manchester in 1924. His father kept a small furniture shop. His family were Methodists and he had to go to chapel twice every Sunday until he was sixteen. Then, given the choice, he never went again. But although he has said it is his misfortune to have no religion, he adds: ‘But the fact remains that the groundswell of my thought only makes sense on the assumption that there is Somebody to whom I am responsible’ (Ronald Hayman, Robert Bolt, page 15).
