Abstract
This chapter will introduce the case-studies presented in Part II of the book and set out the findings in a structure which parallels that of Chapter 2. After a brief account of our approach it examines in turn the three themes of technological development, competition and the firm. By this means we intend to fill out the framework put forward in that chapter and to relate those somewhat abstract concepts to the situation of a firm setting out to sustain its post-innovation performance in the competitive environment. As with all case-study work, reduction of individual complexities to common factors is problematic. The case-studies later in this volume should be regarded as the main body of evidence, this chapter being a summary, not a substitute. To facilitate this supporting role the case-studies are cross-referenced where they are cited.
