In vivo Regulation of Brain Dopamine (DA) Receptors by Antidepressants and CNS Stimulants

  • Chapter

Abstract

CNS stimulants and some antidepressants are known to activate central DA-ergic transmission, by inhibition of the uptake of DA or by its release from nerve terminals. These effects are well-documented. Surprisingly, they is only sparse information on the effect of these classes of drugs on DA receptors. Recently, we have shown that bupropion (BUP), an antidepressant, can modify the affinity of DA receptors after its acute injection to rats (Bischoff et al., 1984) To further characterize the mode of action of CNS stimulants and DA-activating antidepressants, we studied their effects on in vitro and in vivo (3H)spiperone (SPI) binding.
