Modulation of Dopamine Sensitive Dyskinesia by Estradiol and Prolactin in Primates

  • Chapter
Dopaminergic Systems and their Regulation

Abstract

We first reported in 1977 that estrogens given orally to patients suffering from tardive dyskinesia or Dopa-induced diskinesia could improve their condition (Bedard et al 1977). This observation was later confirmed and extended (Bedard et al 1979, Villeneuve et al 1980, Koller et al 1982, Glazer, personal communication). Most of these trials involved the addition of estrogens to the usual drug regimen. At the time, we proposed that estrogen acted more or less as a weak neuroleptic to reduce dopaminergic transmission.
