Abstract
Romeo and Juliet has always been very popular on the stage (see page 61). Literary critics have approved less wholeheartedly, occupying themselves with academic questions, such as whether Romeo and Juliet is a true ‘tragedy’. Theatre audiences, experiencing the living play, have no doubts. This section introduces the ideas of some twentieth-century critics, whose works are listed on page 85.
