Abstract

On his way home from Shaston market Jack Durbeyfield, the carrier, is told by Parson Tringham, the antiquary, that he is descended from the ancient and knightly family of the d’Urbervilles. The Parson’s doubts about the wisdom of imparting this information to the feckless Durbeyfield are confirmed when ‘Sir John’ sends to the Pure Drop Inn for a horse and carriage and some rum.
