Abstract

The Midchester Bank look after their staff very well. They receive above-average salaries for the sort of work they do and enjoy a variety of perks including low rates of interest on loans for cars and houses and a non-contributory pension scheme. Yet their Personnel Department are confronted by higher rates of absenteeism in the bank than in many institutions with far less favourable working environments. As a first step in finding a remedy or remedies they have compiled the following statistics to show the variation between rates of absenteeism last year in the different areas in which the bank operates (see Table 45.1).
