Abstract

A fairly sophisticated transport system is essential in any industrialised economy. On the one hand, raw materials are taken to the factories for processing. The finished goods are carried to warehouses and shops and ultimately to the homes of the consumers. On the other hand, people are carried to and from their work-places and, increasingly in an age of micro-chips and robotic production lines, people can be expected to use additional leisure hours for holiday travel.
