The Rescue

  • Stephen K. Land

Conrad began work on the novel which he eventually called The Rescue in the spring of 1896, after completing An Outcast of the Islands and at about the same time as writing An Outpost of Progress and The Lagoon. The novel was interrupted by a succession of short stories, among which are some of his best: The Nigger of the‘ Narcissus’, Youth, and Heart of Darkness. Another short story, Lord Jim, rapidly grew to novel length and pushed The Rescue yet further aside. Conrad continued to toy with the unfinished manuscript for several years and did not stop work on it until he was well embarked uponNostromo. He took it up again in earnest after The Arrow of Gold and brought it to completion in the spring of 1919.
