Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to describe methods of analysis for the narcotic analgesics. The term narcotic is defined in many different ways by lawyers, police, clinicians, scientists and laymen. For the purpose of this discussion it will be used to describe any natural or synthetic drug that induces effects on the body similar to those of morphine. In the 1980s this definition encompassed approximately thirty compounds, so that in a chapter of necessarily restricted length, discussion must be limited to a representative selection, namely those drugs that are in most constant use (or abuse). The analysis of clinical samples for the purpose of therapeutic drug monitoring and emergency toxicology is adequately covered elsewhere in this work and, therefore, the contents of this chapter will be confined primarily to an assessment of methods available for the analysis of narcotics in autopsy samples. Numerous methods have been published, and it is hardly surprising that many differ only in minor detail. Published data for the distribution of these drugs in animals are extensive, but available toxicological data for man is very limited.
