Abstract

Fluorescence spectroscopy and related techniques have become important tools for the analytical chemist, particularly in drug analysis and the measurement of environmental pollutants. Although fluorescence spectrometers have been commercially available for nearly thirty years, the past decade has seen a great diversification of applications as well as a deeper theoretical understanding of luminescence phenomena. To a large extent this growth is associated with the use of fluorescence in conjunction with chromatographic separations, especially HPLC, as well as with the development of non-isotopic immunoassays and fluorogenic substrates for enzymes.
