Abstract

In the practical (or factual) writing exercise you are given certain material which must be used in a practical, everyday situation indicated by the examiners’ instructions. The exercise tests your ability to write briefly, clearly and accurately. Because the instructions strictly control both the contents and the purpose of your writing, the exercise is sometimes called ‘directed writing’.
