Abstract
All the examining boards require their English Language candidates to write ‘a composition’, although the syllabuses and question papers of some boards refer to it as ‘an essay’ or ‘a piece of continuous writing’. The particular name employed makes no difference to the kind of answer expected from candidates. In the sense in which the terms are used in English Language examinations, ‘a composition’, ‘an essay’ and ‘a piece of continuous writing’ are one and the same.
