Abstract
The Republic of the Philippines is made up of 7107 islands with a total land area of 115 739 square miles, although the Philippines archipelago embraces some 520 700 square miles of land and sea. It stretches 1143 miles from north to south. Eleven islands occupy 96 per cent of the land area and more than half the 55 million population live on the two largest islands, Luzon and Mindanao. Less than one-tenth of the islands are inhabited, and more than 2000 have yet to be named.
