Abstract
Like most things in the medical world, the theoretical background of general practice is still in statu nascendi. Economic problems in health care, social criticism and the birth and development of medical decision-making all question medicine as it stands. This criticism implies that we are on the wrong track when we try to understand decision behaviour with the aid of normative models (expected utility, Bayesian and a few other theories). Instead we should concentrate on what people actually do and develop descriptive models to account for decision processes.
