The Revolutions of 1848

Part of the book series: Studies in European History ((SEURH))

Abstract

The year 1848 saw Europe convulsed by a wave of revolutions. Unprecedented in their scale and dimensions, they shook the political and social order to its foundations. The reaction which then followed, as established elites sought to restore their control through a combination of repression and limited measures of reform, was to be crucial to the development of social relationships in industrialising societies and to the evolution of the modern state.
