Abstract
The recent anti-nuclear demonstrations in Western Europe and the United States have aroused much controversy. Their proponents argue that they are the beginning of a popular tidal wave that will eliminate, or at least reduce, the danger of nuclear war in Europe. Opponents argue that, even if the drive is not being orchestrated from Moscow, it will have asymmetric effects that will weaken the defensibility of the West and increase the chances of war, including nuclear war.
